Bridal Hair Dos & Don’ts: Tips for Picking a Style and Accessorizing your Hair

Hi Lovelies!1f6792b93777b1b903f11f34df8f0493

Every bride wants to look stunning on her wedding day, and one of the most important factors in achieving an overall flawless appearance is the perfect hair to complement your look. We’ve all had a bad hair experience, where you walked out of the salon feeling like your hair didn’t come out the way you had imagined it would. To help all you brides out there avoid that catastrophe happening on the most significant hair day of your life, we’re outlining the more important “Hair-Dos” and “Hair-Don’ts” of bridal hair and accessories. No matter if you’re laid-back or super-glamorous, keeping these tips in mind will help you accomplish your ultimate “Hair-Do” on your wedding day!

Hair-Do: Complement your dress; Hair-Don’t: Be stuck on one style

off the shoulder

Are you the type of person who wears your hair the same way everyday? After years of experimenting with curling irons, straighteners, blow dryers, and beyond, you feel like you’ve finally mastered your ideal hair-do. Although, you might have accomplished a great every-day look, it’s important to consider your dress style when landing on your wedding hairstyle. For example, off the shoulder dresses are complemented best by up-dos. If you are absolutely set on one style, keep it in mind while shopping for your dress. A general rule of thumb however, is to pick your dress before deciding on a particular hair-style; this way you can choose a hair-do that will be complementary to your overall look.

Tip 2: Hair-Do: Be yourself; Hair-Don’t: Overlook the details

down with veil

Although we recommend complementing your dress style, the most important characteristic of bridal hair is that it makes you feel beautiful! If you like how your hair looks down the best, then by all means wear it down! There is no use in forcing yourself into a dress-complementing up-do if it doesn’t feel right to you. That being said, your big day isn’t the time to disregard accessorizing entirely. Your wedding day is one of the only days in your life that you can completely justify adding a sparkly hairpiece, flowers, or a veil. We say: “Go for it, girl!”

Tip 3: Hair-Do: Personalize!  Hair Don’t: Over Accessorize

The amount of hair accessories available to brides these days make’s personalizing your hair-do extra fun! For example, if you’re a going for a more natural style, adding flowers can really add some organic flair to your look. Likewise, incorporating special items, like a sentimental brooch or family veil can add a level of personalization to your ‘do. When adding personalized hair accessories it is crucial to think about the size and impact your additions have on the overall appearance of your look. Just as a large heavily embellished gown can become a distraction to your natural beauty, so can too many large accessories.

Tip 4: Hair-Do: Add Bling! Hair-Don’t: Clash Colors

Whether it be a veil, headpiece, sparkly comb, decorative bobby pin, or brooch, hair accessories that shine are a great way to add some sparkle to your look. Once again, when deciding on these details you should consider the dress you’ve picked! It’s important to remember that the color of your accessory should complement the color of your gown. For example, if your wedding dress has beadwork that is off-white or silver, a gold hair accessory may be distracting. Furthermore, think about the other jewelry you plan to wear on your big day. If you’re going to wear a sentimental pair of pearl earrings, look for a hair accessory that has pearl details that will match your look rather than clash.

Tip 4: Hair-Do: Consider your hair texture; Hair Don’t: Force it for fashion

Young bride getting her hair done before wedding

When choosing a hairstyle or accessory it’s important to consider your hair texture. Thick hair will be able to hold a large embellished clip better than fine hair will. Likewise dainty pins are more easily visible in fine hair than they are in thick hair. It is important to not only consider your hair texture while deciding on accessories, but also in picking an overall hairstyle. Forcing your hair into a fashionable style that it doesn’t naturally comply with can cause some serious day-of discomfort!

Tip 5: Hair-Do: Have a Trial Run; Hair Don’t: Wing It!

We cannot stress the importance of this tip enough! A trial run allows you to make-sure you like the look and feel of your hair before the day-of. It is important to communicate any adjustments you’d like to make to your hair to your stylist at this time. This trial run is also helpful in figuring out if your style is comfortable for you. As we mentioned in our Tip 4, forcing your hair into a fashionable style can sometimes be uncomfortable. Trying your style in advance gives you the opportunity to wear it for an extended amount of time and see how it holds up. Rather than wing it, and potentially walk down the isle unhappy and uncomfortable, have a trial run!

We hope that you will remember these bridal hair Dos and Don’ts from the day of your dress purchase until the day of your wedding (or hair consolation!). The right wedding hair has the power to pull your entire look together. With these tips in mind you’re sure to accomplish your perfect bridal hair-Do!

Wedding Dress Trends Hot Off The Bridal Fashion Week Runway

Hello Lovelies!

Anna Campbell NYBW Runway 2015

Brides-to-be, you are in for a treat! Today we’re re-capping our favorite bridal trends seen at fall bridal fashion week 2015. As magical as bridal fashion week is, the sheer volume of dress options available can become overwhelming! To help you make sense of it all, we’ve narrowed down all the swoon-worthy looks into seven of bridal fashion week’s hottest trends. These gorgeous dresses will have you dreaming of your big day, and are sure to send you running to the nearest bridal boutique! From lovely floral embellishments to foxy plunging necklines this year’s dresses are nothing short of exquisite! So without further ado, here are some of the most coveted bridal trends this year…

Trend 1: 3D Floral Embellishments Screen Shot 2015-10-19 at 9.38.29 AM

Designers (from left): Angel Sanchez, Pronovias, and Marchesa

This dainty detail was spotted all over fall 2015’s bridal catwalks and we absolutely love it! Floral embellishments are so romantic and the 3D effect adds another layer of interest to classic gowns. Designers Angel Sanchez, Pronovias, and Marchesa exemplified how this trend makes a lovely addition on a range of silhouettes. If we had to point you to just one over-arching trend from bridal fashion week, it quite possibly would be to these sweet floral embellishments that were everywhere at fashion week!

Trend 2: Detachable Skirts

removable skirts

Designers (from left): Naeem Kahn, Elizabeth Stuart, Carolina Herrera

We love the detachable skirt trend because it gives you the option to have two dresses in one! This style is for the bride who drools over dramatic princess gowns in magazines, but knows that there is no way she could dance the night away in one at her reception. Luckily, with detachable skirts you can be glamorous at your ceremony and still get down on the dance floor in a sleeker silhouette later.

Trend 3: Low backs with Illusion Details

Designers (from left): Lela Rose, Legends by Ramona Keveza, Sabrina Dahan

The Illusion trend (when parts of the dress are heavily beaded or embroidered yet still sheer) was applied to just about every aspect of wedding dresses seen at bridal fashion week this year. That being said, we most adore this treatment on a wedding dress with a low back. The addition of illusion details to a low-backed dress gives this timeless trend a new flair. This combo is for brides who like the idea of having a bit of a sexy styled dress while keeping their look tasteful.

Trend 4: Plunging Necklines

plunging necklines

Designers (from left): Galia Lahav, Marchesa, Romona Keveza

This risqué trend was all over the designer runways this fall (and we love it!). Despite the bold plunge, many designers, like the ones featured above, made this daring style look delicate by adding lace and soft edges. We think Marchesa (center) did an exceptional job softening this look with the addition of light and airy off-the-shoulder sleeves. Sexy bridal wear is becoming more and more popular every year. This trend confirms that it is here to stay!

Trend 5: Stylish Separates

crop tops

Designers (from left): Pronovias, Elizabeth Stuart, Honor for Stone Fox Bride

If you thought crop tops were only for the beach, think again! This year’s bridal fashion week was full of stylish separates like the ones featured above. Top lengths ranged from nearly touching the skirt’s waistband, to midriff bearing tank tops! This fun two-pieced trend is for the bride who isn’t afraid to take risks and wants to wear something chic. Although there were many pretty lace versions seen on the runways, we think these stylish separates look best when left simple, crisp, and classy.

Trend 6: Soft Blues

Designers (from left): Carolina Herrera, Monique Lhuillier, Hayley Paige

This trend brings the tradition of “Something Blue” to a whole new level! Anyone who thinks bridal gowns absolutely must be white is seriously missing out. We like how designers Carolina Herrera, Monique Lhuillier, and Hayley Paige all complimented this stunning shade with glorious amounts of volume and added texture. In a soft blue gown a bride is sure to stand out!

Trend 7: Flower Power

Designers (from left): Kate McDonald, Naeem Kahn, Romona Keveza

Floral printed wedding dresses were a staple in this year’s inspiration for Spring 2016 collections. Whether they were hand painted like at Kate McDonald, or simply within a subdued print like at Naeem Kahn and Romona Keveza, bridal blooms consistently awed us! These delicately patterned gowns give brides the opportunity to add just a little pop of color to a traditionally all white outfit.

Intern Spotlight: Meet Maddy!

Hello Lovelies!

My name is Maddy, and I am the newest addition to the Marisa Nicole Events team. I am thrilled to have this opportunity and to start learning about what it takes to create a truly memorable wedding! In addition to working with Marisa and her team, I’m excited for the chance to meet some of you! To give you a better impression of who I am, I’ve answered a few of the more talked about questions in the wedding planning business…

  • Favorite Wedding Blog: I’m all about Style Me Pretty. The beautifully selected maddy-2
images on Style Me Pretty’s newest page The Vault entice the inner Pinterest maven in me. Not to mention, the wedding dresses in the Look Book are simply stunning!
  • Describe the Perfect Wedding Cake Flavor Combo: I’m a sucker for anything with cream cheese frosting, but I’m especially happy when it’s paired with spiced carrot cake! Even so, I think you’ve got to give the groom his favorite cake. Isn’t there that saying, “A way to a man’s heart is through his stomach”?
  • Favorite Styling Genre for Event Design: Classic with rustic touches! In particular, I love the feel of outdoor weddings. The combination of lush greenery with crisp traditional details is so complementary!
  • Event Planning Super Hero Skill: The ability to slow down time! Weddings are so much fun and excitement, but a couple extra minutes of prep time would be really valuable!
  • Veil, Flower or Headpiece? Hands down a Veil! As I see it, this is your one chance in life to wear something so elegant and unique to bridal wear.
  • Favorite Wedding Tradition: The bouquet toss. This friendly competition is especially fun with separating bouquets!
  • The moment in every wedding that never fails to bring you to tears: Personalized vows never fail to tear me up! This exchange between the couple really highlights how extraordinary, sentimental, and sweet love is.
